Promoting Filipino Martial Arts in Central VA since 2013
Kali is a Filipino Martial Art (FMA), and weapon-based combat system. It includes hand-to-hand combat, joint locks, grappling, and weapon disarming. It teaches offensive and defensive techniques based off of angles and basic geometry which can be applied to any hand held weapon. Training consists of solo and partner drills that build speed, power, timing, fluidity, and tactile sensitivity. Practical application and effective use of these techniques is tested through regular sparring.
Our goal is to develop well-rounded martial artists who have a solid understanding of all ranges of combat. We emphasize skill development in both armed and unarmed fighting as we seek to obtain every possible edge in a conflict. Our training approach is pragmatic, efficient, and explicit. We work toward developing the attributes needed to be functional fighters, good friends, and responsible citizens.
Cville Kali is an official Dog Brothers Martial Arts training group.
Dog Brothers Martial Arts (DBMA) is a system of many styles where the ultimate goal is to “walk as a warrior for all your days™.” The core of our curriculum is Filipino Martial Arts: 1) Inosanto Blend (Guro Dan Inosanto), 2) Pekiti Tirsia (Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje), 3) Lameco (the late Punong Guro Edgar Sulite), and others. We draw from outside of the FMA as well, usually within the framework of the Majapahit Empire, including Krabi Krabong, Silat, and Bando. We also take from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
The curriculum is divided into three areas: Real Contact Stick Fighting, Kali Tudo™ and Die Less Often. Kali Tudo™ is our empty handed sub-system: striking, trapping, throwing, grappling, and striking during grappling. By adrenalizing the empty handed version of the weaponry movements, we prepare ourselves to have “consistency across categories” i.e. that there is just one idiom of movement for both empty hand and where weapons may be in play thus leading to faster reactions in street situations. Die Less Often™ - the interface of gun, knife, and empty hand - is the reality based component to our training.
See here for an overview of the DBMA system.
